‘What continues to strike me is the resilience of the people, the entrepreneurs of Bangladesh’
The StartUp Cup 2017 – a flagship business model competition – has begun in the city with a view to creating an ecosystem of entrepreneurs.
This year’s theme of the StartUp event is – Nurture locally, Scale nationally. The Netherlands Embassy, the government of Bangladesh and the India-based impact investment firm Aavishkaar and BetterStories Ltd jointly organized the second edition of the event.
The StartUp competition happening in over 60+ countries including Bangladesh invites local entrepreneurs to undertake their business by offering collective support to one another, said a press release the organizers issued on Monday.
Through the participation of community leaders, educators, seasoned entrepreneurs and corporate supporters, a successful entrepreneurial ecosystem will be created, added the release.
The competition will cover seven divisions of Bangladesh, excluding the capital Dhaka. A specialized StartUp bus will travel across Barisal, Chittagong, Khulna, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sylhet to bring together promising entrepreneurs.
Netherlands Ambassador in Dhaka Leoni Cuelenaere, Kabir Bin Anwar, Project Director, A2i and Director General (Admin), Prime Minister’s Office, Sanchyan Chakrabarty, partner for Aavishkaar Frontier Fund, Fahmidul Islam Shantonu, BetterStories representative and Selima Hossain Allen, Project Director, Bangladesh StartUp Cup 2017, were present during the press conference.
Leoni Cuelenaere said: “What continues to strike me is the resilience of the people, the entrepreneurs of Bangladesh.”
They are despite often challenging conditions taking advantage of the continuing levels of economic growth to improve their lives, added the envoy.
Sanchayan Chakraborty focused on the Bangladesh’s history of entrepreneurship.
“We see today the emergence of a young generation from across the country with the passion and ideas to create enterprises that address market opportunities,” he said.
